Character Sketch - Margo Roth Spiegelman

Margo Roth Spiegelman is a strange girl. We see her through Q (Quentin) and we never really know what she's thinking or who she is until the end of out time with her. Q says that we all have our own versions of Margo but none of them are actually her. She is fun and mysterious, and confusing as hell. After throwing caution into the wind and letting Q into her crazy world for one night, she disappears and forces the reader to gather information about her from others, as she forces her friends to find her whereabouts. She leads her friends on a wild goose chase to find her, leaving behind clues and strange signs.

Carla Gannis Guest Speaker

Carla Gannis was an excellent guest presenter. It was interesting to learn that although she was trained in more classical fields, she still makes a living creating more modern and technological art. She seemed to be very excited about all the work that she had done in the past and that she was doing currently, which just goes to show the dedication that it takes to make it in the business of design. Her manner of presentation was genuine in that she really believed in her work, and she was confident in the material that she presented to us. Her work itself was interesting and thoughtful, but fun and entertaining. The fact that she taught herself most of the tools she currently uses for her art and design is amazing and inspiring. I’m very glad that we had the experience of hearing her speak about her work.

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School

Molly Crabapple, an artist located in NYC, founded Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School in 2005 and it has grown to have meetings all over the world. It is a combination of life-drawing and cabaret shows, usually taking place every other Saturday. Ms. Crabapple's goal was to not just capture the image on the page, but to celebrate the model and have fun drawing them. The burlesque aspect of it adds an unexpected twist to the event, making it all the more amazing.

Famous Self-Portraits

The NY Times had an article about a particular bartender, Burt Britton, who collected impromptu self portraits of famous people that he met over the years. He collected them into a book called “Self-Portrait: Book People Picture Themselves," which is out of print and extremely hard to find. It is very intriguing to see how these people look at themselves, compared to how we see them.

Automatic Pancakes?

Making pancakes isn't as easy as it looks. Well, now it is. The ChefStack is an interesting invention, and it's making me hungry for pancakes. An automated pancake machine? No need for fumbling and flipping and burning anything? That's my kind of breakfast. But with an interface that almost ANYONE can use, is it too easy? How lazy can we really be that we don't even want to cook for ourselves anymore?
